Talking about social media responsibility
Dance like no one is watching.
In this era of social media can we really do that? Is it possible for us to ignore the fact that we are constantly under scrutiny and just live life the way we want it?
Well, a lot of the time you have the power to choose what you want to show online. Sure, you are a blogger or influencer and you have followers who are just dying to hear from you. But are they really? Or are you just worried that if you don’t show your face to them for a few days, they will forget you and move on to the next big thing?
It is not the fear of being forgotten, it is the fear that you have nothing worthy of being remembered by that keeps one in a constant state of activity (and anxiety). This holds true for anyone, not just bloggers/ influencers.
Yup, it is hard to make an impact on society without being on social media these days, but you are part of that society. You are part of the scroll, double click and move on generation as well. How often do you stop to drop a comment on an image or hit the link to read the blog post? Why are content creators spending hours on end to put this together for you if your reaction is just a glance and a double click (sometimes it is not even that). If you don’t stop to make the time, then why do you expect someone to do the same for you? How is that fair?
We have allowed social media to empower us and also to break us down. We want to dance like no one is watching, but we want the world to watch, like, comment, share, and subscribe. We talk about social media as a source of depression and mental anguish, but we also make sure that we never post a bad picture online. We are a generation of contradictions like no other. What is the message that we are really trying to put out there?
I think what I am trying to say is think about what social media means to you. Is it a creative outlet, a source of inspiration or just a way to scroll mindlessly through the lives of others?
